The gemological name for the mineral estatite, bronzite is a member of the pyroxene group of minerals. Varying in shades from gold to brown, bronzites are usually swirled in a complementary hue. The cleavage surface of this gemstone exhibits a metallic sheen or schiller. It is a constituent of many basic igneous rocks. Because it is an iron-bearing gemstone, bronzite is believed to exhibit protective qualities.
