Credit for perfecting the production of whole cultured pearls is owed to the Japanese. In the 1890s, Mikimoto Kokishi experimented long and hard with the process, ultimately leading to the establishment of the cultured pearl industry. He concluded that the most successful stimulant to pearl production was the introduction of a tiny mother-of-pearl bead into the mollusk’s tissue. Mikimoto Kokishi rendered the process by which the most exquisite cultured pearls are produced today.
A translucent to opaque variety of microcrystalline quartz, the inclusions in aventurine give it its color and sparkle, or aventurescence. Because the aventurine in this necklace has a reddish-pink sparkle, it is likely combined with hematite.
