In Nepal, the moon is an important aspect of the calendar. Many of that Asian nation’s festivals revolve around the moon, particularly in its full phase. For example, Buddha Jaynti, which celebrates the birthday of Lord Buddha, falls on the full moon night of May/June. The impetus for this celebration dates back to about 543 B.C.
The enchanting play of light is what differentiates the moonstone from its semi-precious gemstone counterparts. Indeed, the name “moonstone” derives from the mysterious shimmer the gemstone casts as it is viewed from different angles. In the jewelry industry, this iridescent sheen is known as adularescence. Ancient civilizations believed that they could detect the moonstone in various phases of the moon.
The earliest known peridots were used in jewelry dating back to the 2nd century B.C. Then, peridots were extracted from a small volcanic island in the Red Sea. Today’s most prolific peridot deposits are located in the Kashmir region.

All gemstones, including peridots and moonstones, should be wiped clean with a soft cloth to avoid scratching their surface. Wash the stones with warm soapy water, gently brush them with a toothbrush and then wipe them dry.
Silver jewelry should be stored in an airtight container with a soft lining. Cleaning with soap and water and buffing with a soft cloth will keep your silver shiny as new. Avoid exposure of your silver jewelry to abrasive cleansers and bleach, which may cause discoloration.
