Known for his religious works of art, Haitian artist Saincilius Ismaël often interweaves voodoo themes with Christian elements. Such duality can be seen in his oil canvas “La Madonne.” From a Christian perspective, one witnesses the Madonna, Mary mother of Jesus, holding the Lamb of God. At the same time, viewers of this painting can see colorful and ethereal hints of some of the minor voodoo spirits like Aida Wedo, the rainbow spirit, and Mawu Lisa, the spirit of creation. Measuring 16” by 20” framed, this original oil canvas is signed by the artist.

For instance, both believe in a supreme being and both hold people who led exceptional lives in reverence. Catholics call these people, who are usually given a single responsibility or special attribute, patron saints while voodoo names them loa. One of Haiti’s greatest painters, Saincilius Ismaël showcases these religious similarities in his oil canvas “La Madonne.”
