The garnet gemstone dates back to 3100 B.C. in Egypt. These early Egyptians adorned their amulets and talismans with garnet. Garnets were also often tucked in the tombs of the Egyptian deceased to guide and protect them on their journey to the afterlife.
According to an ancient Egyptian legend, the tourmaline crossed paths with a rainbow as it traveled from the center of the earth. As it did so, it assumed all the colors of the spectrum, which is why the gemstone emits prismatic color.
Onyx - rich black, nearly opaque - is a variety of agate, which belongs to the chalcedony family of gemstones. The pure black onyx is rarely found naturally, making it a coveted variety of the gemstone. Chalcedony comes in a full spectrum of colors from white to black. At one time, all shades of the stone were known as onyx, but today that term is reserved for chalcedony of a black hue.
