Visitors to Morocco’s open-air marketplace are treated to the nature-inspired visual of the wooly sheep that are placed up for sale. Marrakechi artisan Lahbila Said is one of the artisans whose creative calling is lured by these sheep. Handmade sheep-leather products like this tote bag are a buyer’s treat in the streets of the souk in Morocco, the country’s largest traditional market.
Hand-selected from the finest of sheep leathers, the hide of this tote bag is dyed in the tannery. The traditional Moroccan dyeing techniques that have been around for thousands of years are used in its coloration. The design of the tote is then hand-drawn by artisan Lahbila Said and cut out of the leather hide by hand. Some of the stitching is done by a machine but the rest of this bag is entirely handcrafted.

Because it is a natural material, leather needs to breathe. It should, therefore, be stored in a cool, dry place that is well ventilated. Never store your sheep-leather products in plastic bags. Also, avoid exposing your sheep leather to harsh light and sunshine. To remove everyday dirt from your sheep leather, periodically wipe it with a water-dampened cloth.
