For Mongolian nomads, like those from which Grassroots derives its handmade products, felt is an essential element of their material culture. A textile that is produced from wool fibers, felt is used by the nomads to insulate their yurt (a portable tent constructed with a wood-lattice frame, covered by felt and is commonly used by the nomads in Asia) and boot, to make carpets and cushions, and to craft sacks and containers such as this tote bag.
One of the oldest forms of fabric known to mankind, felt is a non-woven cloth. It is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers—normally wool, as is the case in this tote bag. Felt can be any color, hard or soft, and can be formed into any shape or size.
