A rich black, nearly opaque, gemstone, onyx is a variety of agate, which is part of the chalcedony family of gemstones. The pure black onyx is rarely found naturally, making it a much-coveted gemstone. Chalcedony comes in a full spectrum of colors from white to black. At one time, all shades of the stone were known as onyx, but today that term is reserved for chalcedony of a black hue.
