Turquoise is sometimes referred to as the “fallen skystone” or the “gem of the centuries.” It is reputed to have spiritual life-enhancing qualities. A 7,000-year-old mummified Egyptian queen bore a turquoise bracelet around her wrist, marking the oldest known piece of jewelry.
The tourmaline gemstone can exhibit two colors in one crystal. It is sometimes referred to as the “electric stone” because it becomes statically charged when heated or rubbed. Called schorl, tourmaline that is black was believed by ancient civilizations to protect and strengthen the heart.
Provided it is dried immediately, turquoise jewelry can be washed with warm sudsy water. It should be handled and stored carefully to avoid scratching and should be kept away from high heat and chemicals.
Caution should be taken with tourmaline to avoid temperature changes, steaming, chemicals and ultrasonic cleansers.
Sterling silver should be stored in an airtight container with a soft lining. Cleaning with soap and water and buffing with a soft cloth will keep your sterling silver shiny as new. Avoid exposure of your sterling silver to abrasive cleansers and bleach, which may cause discoloration.
