In the Tatra Mountains of Poland, artisans craft decorative wooden boxes using traditional and centuries-old techniques. This tradition dates far back into Polish history. The farmers and shepherds who settled into this mountainous region during the first millennium A.D. worked wood to wile away the long winter hours.
The decorative process they use to fashion boxes like this jewelry box involves the burning of patterns into the wood’s surface. To add a splash of color, the Polish artisans then hand-paint sections of the wood with colored stains, giving the boxes the same Art Nouveau flavor that made Gustav Klimt a world-renowned painter. The overall effect hearkens back to the country’s Old World traditions.
