Fes is one of the four imperial cities (Fes, Meknes, Rabat, and Marrakech) in Morocco; it is also the oldest of the four cities. Fes is located in the northern region of Morocco and is considered the center of Islamic Orthodoxy and the capital of the north. Green, the color of Islam, predominates on the walls and decor of Fes. This is where the independent movement of Morocco was born. Similar to Marrakech, the medina (old city) of Fes is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site. The Fes Medina is one of the largest living medieval cities in the world.
The country of Morocco boasts about 2,700,000 cattle, 17,000,000 sheep and 5,300,000 goats. Many of these livestock are sold in the souk, the largest traditional marketplace in Morocco. Amongst fellow countrymen dressed in the traditional Moroccan jellaba, artisan Lahbila Said bids on the skins of these animals every morning. He then fashions them into fine leather crafts, like this purse, and sells them in his tiny marketplace shop.
Four sheep breeds are well identified in Morocco: Timahdit in the Middle Atlas and neighboring zones, the Sardi in the plains north of the Atlas, the Beni Guil in the Eastern High plateaux, and the Dman of the oases. The finest skins from these varieties are tanned and dyed by Said and then hand-cut and stitched into exquisite leather products.

Because it is a natural material, leather needs to breathe. It should, therefore, be stored in a cool, dry place that is well ventilated. Never store your sheep-leather products in plastic bags. Also, avoid exposing your sheep leather to harsh light and sunshine. To remove everyday dirt from your sheep leather, periodically wipe it with a water-dampened cloth.
