Meaning “stone,” royal blue lapis lazuli is a variety of lazurite. The term lazuli comes from the Persian word “lazhward” which means blue. Blue, however, is too generic of a term to describe the exquisite shadings of this gemstone. The darker the blue saturation of the lapis, the more prized the gemstone is.
The rich coloration of these gemstones is so beautiful, in fact, that ancient civilizations referred to lapis stones as “sapphires.” Today, lapis is found in only a few regions of the world, including deposits in Siberia, Chile and Afghanistan, where the stones that highlight this necklace were mined.
This Afghan Wrapped Lapis Necklace measured approximately 19 inches and is of a lariat style. It can be worn in various styles and lengths.

Lapis falls mid-range on the Mohs scale, making it a semi-durable gemstone. Care, however, should be taken to avoid scratching or denting your lapis. Store it separately from other gemstones and avoid exposure to chemicals.
Silver jewelry should be stored in an airtight container with a soft lining. Cleaning with soap and water and buffing with a soft cloth will keep your silver shiny as new. Avoid exposure of your silver jewelry to abrasive cleansers and bleach, which may cause discoloration.
