Pikultong Wongnang

Pikultong Wongnang had a common dream for a woman of Thailand; it was to provide a better life for her family.  This dream involved good food for her family to eat, an education for her children and a small amount of savings to keep them safe in the event of an emergency.  Although her story is not unique, Pikultong’s road to success proves that her determination and desire to help others shows an uncommon spirit of strength.

From her four year of college education, Pikultong  created the Nong-Se Group in Chiang Mai, consisting of 15 women who were unskilled and unable to find work but needed to provide for their family.  Using the traditional northern Thai Pafai-Muang silk and the Naka cotton as her primary material for the purses and totes, Pikultong designed the bags herself and taught the Nong-Se women the skill of weaving and stitching.

The women meet in Pikultong’s house each day to make the bags.  Pikultong’s house is not only a place of work but a community where women helped each other while learning a marketable skill.  Pikultong draws her design inspiration from all elements around her, such as the temple, tribal patterns, and animals that are indigenous to Thailand.  Together, these women have turned their struggle into a story of friendship, support and success.
