Patrice Piard

Patrice Piard has a degree in architectural design, but he found his true calling as an artist.  In Haitian Art In The Diaspora, published in 2003, he is quoted as saying, “I would like a poetic quality to my paintings.  If I give too much information, the painting becomes a dead-end description of a certain place.”  Piard most often portrays scenes of Haitian life and Haitian people with a unique combination of style and colors. The influence of both architecture and poetry is reflected in a painting such as “Young Boy.” The main character's eyes are lost in a far-away dream that leaves the boy thoughtful and cautious.  He is surrounded by a background of geometric shapes that reminds us of the artist’s training as an architect.  Patrice Piard also stays close to his country of origin through his palette and his themes.  The colors he chooses are sharp and vibrant.  The appearance of the young boy and the hat he is wearing are evocative of Haiti.  Patrice Piard was born in Camp-Perrin, Haiti in 1947 and immigrated to the US in 1983.  His work has been exhibited in Haiti, France, Belgium, Canada as well as the USA.
