Martha Patricia Lopez did not always dream of becoming an artist. Born in Bogota, Colombia she obtained a degree in health education, specializing in personal and family counseling, with the goal of working with adults who are mentally challenged. For the past 20 years she has devoted herself to caring for people, a profession that has given her a great sense of the human spirit - to hear what others don’t hear and see what others don’t see. A few years ago, Martha chanced on a meeting with an old friend who was a jewelry artist. This encounter served as a catalyst for Martha to discover her own creativity that had always been a part of her but had never been explored. She began experimenting with different kinds of indigenous materials including seeds, precious stones, and other beautiful gems. Before long, she was creating remarkable designs of her own. Making jewelry by hand allows Martha to express her individuality and passion for the art. Martha has completely embraced the artist within her and has made a name for herself in Colombia. Even with the success of her new career, Martha has not changed. Never losing sight of her human sensibility, Martha’s art simply serves as an alternative way to connect with the world. So much so, she always attempts to maintain close ties with her customers, as they are the ones who “have opened her up to all the possibilities of creation.”
