Marithou Dupoux

Marie-Thérèse Dupoux aka Marithou Dupoux was born in a family of artists. Her father was a guitarist and a music teacher; her aunt was an art teacher and her older sister was an artist. The Award-winner director Arnold Antonin produced a documentary, “Marithou Dupoux: Femme Peintre d’Haiti” (Woman Artist of Haiti), where he describes her as “a multi-talented artist, haunted by the need to transform into art everything around her.” She paints, sculpts and has done collages as well as ceramic articles. Her inspiration is the world around her. Haiti has now more women painters than men and Marithou is the most important one. Marithou Dupoux had several artistic periods. She first painted in the surrealist style, next she concentrated on still lives. Later she took classes with famed Haitian painter Tiga. “Domestic Bliss,” is from her latest period where she expresses herself in a fantastic, imaginary style. In the troubled and violent world of Haiti, she cherishes moment of peace and, in this canvas, depicts a quiet scene where cats, dogs, men, women and children coexist peacefully. Marithou Dupoux was born in 1948 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Her works have been exhibited around the world, in particular Haiti, Ecuador and the USA.
