Lyonel Laurenceau

Lyonel Laurenceau was born in 1942 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  He was trained formally at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts and Le Foyer des Arts Plastiques (School of Arts and Center for Plastic Arts).  He also studied in Paris, France at the ABC school.  Fame and recognition came to him early in is career.  In 1966, he won the first prize at the New York World's Fair and has won many other prizes since.  His present style is described as Symbolic Expressionism.  His canvases often portrait young children or animals in an exuberant style, where layers of shapes and colors are weaved together and set in a fanciful, fairytale-like world.  The painting showcased here, “Bouquet de Roses” (Bouquet of Roses), is from an earlier period.  It is done in the classic style of nature morte (still life) where the artist paints inanimate objects to render their unique beauty.  In this canvas, Laurenceau depicts the serene charm of the flowers with subtle lines, delicate shadows and blended colors.  Lyonel Laurenceau is a world renowned artist who had exhibits in the Caribbean Islands, South and North America as well as  Europe.  His works is displayed in many museums around the world and is sought after by art collectors everywhere.
