Levoy Exil

Levoy Exil was a small farmer living in the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, Haiti when he met Haitian artist Tiga in 1970.  Already in his twenties, Exil had little education and no interest in painting.  Yet, Tiga introduced him to the arts and Levoy Exil became one of the original members of the school of Saint Soleil (Saint Sun).  Saint Soleil encouraged painters, poets, writers, craftspeople, singers, dancers, sculptors and musicians to practice their art free from outside influences and free from the spoils of money and fame.  Eventually, Levoy Exil and the other members of Saint Soleil became famous through the exhibits organized by the school.  Levoy Exil later became a member of Cinq Soleils (Five Suns) so named because the five artists that comprised the group were all members of Saint Soleil.  Levoy Exil’s inspiration often come to him in dreams that involve Voodoo and its spirits.  He has become known for painting intertwined figures with wide open unflinching eyes surrounded by a dark, gloomy surrounding as in “Haunting Eyes”, or by a colorful, cheerful setting as in “Playful Eyes”.  Levoy Exil was born in Soisson-la-Montagne, Haiti in 1944 and is known worldwide.  His work has been showcased in Haiti, France, Israel and the USA.
