When
Emmanuel Merisier arrived in the United States in 1966, he made a
living as a construction worker. But he loved art. He had studied at
the College of Beaubron Ardouin in his native Haiti and had been
inspired by painters. He even had joined the Foyer des Arts Plastiques and Brochette.
So he soon attended classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York
City and started to produce his own pieces. Eventually, Haitian Art
lover and famous writer Selden Rodman bought several of Merisier’s
paintings. And he made them part of the permanent collection in the Selden Rodman Gallery of Popular Arts of the Americas and the Caribbean, at Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ. Many
Haitian artists draw on the Haitian Primitive Art style, but Merisier
stands out with paintings, such as “Nature Morte,” where we can
recognize the influence of the modern European masters. His style is often exuberant, rich in color and symbolism. Emmanuel
Merisier was born in 1929 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and presently
resides in the USA. His work has been exhibited in Cuba, Brazil,
Mexico, and the USA.
