Dieuseul Paul

Dieuseul (God Alone) Paul was not trained as an artist, yet he started to paint at 19 after Haitian master Tiga introduced him to the arts.  Paul became one of the members of the school of Saint Soleil (Saint Sun).  Saint Soleil encouraged painters, poets, writers, craftspeople, singers, dancers, sculptors and musicians to practice their art free from outside influences and free from the spoils of money and fame. Eventually, Dieuseul Paul and the other members of Saint Soleil became famous through the exhibits organized by the school.  Paul’s paintings are heavily influenced by Voodoo and often depict religious symbols set in vibrant colors.  His unique style, as represented in “Lwa” is instantly recognizable.  He uses a medley of sharp colors, heavy black outlines and elaborate details.  He gave an interview for the book, “Images of Haiti,”  a catalog of the personal Haitian art collection of Danish filmmaker and art collector, Jorgen Leth.  "These are very spiritually inspired paintings representing harmony,” Dieuseul Paul said, “unity and the relationship between the spiritual and the material. And this is exactly the power of art...There is such a strong spirit in Saint Soleil -- sometimes it prevents you from sleeping."  Dieuseul Paul was born in Damiens, Haiti in 1952 and died in his home in July 2006.
